
Thomas Jeffrey Hanks (born July 9th, 1956) is an American actor and filmmaker. He is renowned for his comedic and dramatic roles and is considered an American popular culture icon. Thomas Jeffrey Hanks was the son of Janet Marylyn, a hospital worker, and Amos Mefford Hanks (an itinerant chef). His mother was originally named "Fraga" and his father was English. Tom was raised in the family he refers to as "fractured". He was not an actor in college and credits his inability to get a role in a college production as the reason he started his career. He attended a downtown audition for a production in the theater for community members. Director invited him to Cleveland and that was where his acting career started.
